New gutters start at the roof edge, not at the gutter. The fascia has to be sound, the drip edge has to lap correctly, and every run needs a slight, steady fall toward its outlet. Our gutter work in Los Angeles starts with those three checks, and the gutter itself comes after.

If you have gutters that leak or sag, ask about gutter repair before replacing them. If leaves are the problem, gutter guards may solve it without new metal. When a system is past saving or never existed, installation is the right answer.

Seamless gutters in Los Angeles: what you are buying

A seamless gutter is formed from a coil of metal to the exact length of each run. Joints show up only at corners and downspout outlets. A sectional system is pieced together from short lengths, so it has a joint every few feet, and each one depends on sealant.

Sealant is where Los Angeles works against you. The Valley sees about 77 days a year at 90°F or hotter in Van Nuys, by NOAA's normals, and sun-baked caulk shrinks and splits. Fewer seams means fewer leaks to chase later. Our post on seamless vs sectional gutters goes through the comparison in more detail.

When to replace gutters, and which material to choose

Replace when seams leak on more than one run, the metal is rusted through, the gutter has been bent or pulled loose more than once, or the fascia behind it is rotten. Patching a tired system costs money each year. Aluminum is the common choice because it is light, does not rust and comes in many colors.

Material Strengths Watch for
Aluminum Light, rust-free, many colors Dents from ladders, thin material on bargain jobs
Steel Stiff, takes weight well Rust once the coating is scratched; poor near salt air
Copper Long-lived, ages to a patina Cost, and mixing with other metals
Vinyl Cheap, easy to cut Brittle and warped by sun, a poor fit for the Valley

Near the coast, fasteners matter as much as the gutter. In Santa Monica, Marina del Rey and Hermosa Beach, marine air corrodes cheap screws and thin finishes first.

What does a new gutter installation include?

A complete gutter job is more than the long trough. On our written scope, the usual lines are:

  • Gutter runs formed to length, with outside and inside corners mitered
  • Hangers set at the right spacing and fall for each run
  • Outlets, downspouts and elbows sized to the roof area feeding them
  • Extensions or splash blocks to carry water away at the base
  • End caps, drip edge laps and sealant at every joint that needs one
  • Removal and haul-away of the old gutters, plus fascia repair where it is needed

Local trees change the plan. Eucalyptus leaves and bark, palm fronds and jacaranda blooms all land in Los Angeles gutters, and each one clogs differently. If your yard has them, say so at the estimate, because outlet count and guard options depend on it.

5-inch or 6-inch gutters: how we decide

The width is a choice, not a default. We size each run from what drains into it. That means the roof area feeding it, how steep the plane is, whether a valley sends a concentrated stream to one corner, and how many downspouts are practical on that wall.

A short run on a low-pitch ranch roof may be well served by the standard 5-inch trough. A tall, steep roof or a long run with a valley emptying into it often calls for 6-inch gutters and a larger downspout. We will not quote a capacity figure for either one, because it changes with the roof. Instead we explain the reason for the size we recommend, run by run.

Downspout installation: where the water goes next

A gutter only moves water sideways. The downspout decides whether it ends up at the footing, in a planter, on a neighbor's wall or in a drain. Good placement puts outlets where the run bottoms out and where a pipe can reach the ground without crossing a doorway.

At the base we use splash blocks, extensions or a connection to an existing drain, depending on the lot. Hillside sites need the most thought, since water leaves the pipe and keeps going downhill. In Calabasas, foothill lots and HOA-approved colors both shape the layout. In Santa Clarita, tract homes often share short side yards, so we check where a discharge will land.

Gutter installation in Los Angeles, step by step

  1. Measure the roof edge. We note run lengths, corners, heights and roof pitch, and take photos.
  2. Check the fascia. Soft or split wood is replaced first, since gutters hang from it.
  3. Remove old gutters. Where gutters are being replaced, we take them off and look at what was hiding behind.
  4. Set hangers and pitch. Hangers go in at the right spacing with a slight fall toward each outlet.
  5. Form and hang the runs. Seamless lengths are shaped to the house, fitted at corners and sealed at outlets.
  6. Place downspouts and test. We attach the pipes, add extensions, run water through where conditions allow, and clear the site.

What affects the cost of new gutters?

Price follows the total length of gutter and the height you are working at. Corners, extra downspouts, tile roofs that need special hangers and hard-to-reach sides take more time. Material and guard coverage change it again.

Old gutter removal, fascia repair and drainage work at the base are separate lines on a good quote. Our prices come in writing after we have seen the roof edge. If you are comparing bids, read what each includes, not just the total. We lay out the usual factors in our guide to gutter installation cost in Los Angeles.

Permits, HOA review and warranty terms to ask about

Gutter installation on its own is often simple for permits, but a job paired with a re-roof follows the re-roof rules. Rules depend on whether your address is in the City of Los Angeles (LADBS) or an independent city, so check with your local building department. Your contract should say who handles any permit.

HOAs and some historic districts set color and profile. Ask for approval in writing before material is ordered. For warranties, get the manufacturer's terms and the installer's workmanship terms in writing, and read what voids them. We do not state warranty terms here, so ask for whatever is offered on paper.

Gutter Installation: common questions

Are seamless gutters better than sectional gutters?

For most houses, yes. Seamless runs are formed to length, so joints sit only at corners and outlets instead of every few feet. Fewer joints means fewer places for sealant to dry out in the Valley heat and start dripping. Sectional gutters can suit short runs or places where a long piece cannot be carried in.

Do I need 5-inch or 6-inch gutters?

It depends on the roof, not the house. Large or steep roof planes, valleys that funnel water into one spot and long runs with few downspouts often justify the wider trough. A modest roof with short runs may do fine with the smaller size. We measure each run and tell you which size we would use and why.

Can new gutters be installed the same day as a roof?

Often, yes, as the schedule allows. The best order is drip edge and shingles first, then the gutters, so the metal laps correctly into the trough. One customer describes a townhome roof and gutters finished in one day. A larger roof or fascia repair can push the gutters to a second visit.

How long does gutter installation take on a one-story Los Angeles home?

Many one-story houses take part of a day once the material is on site, because seamless runs are formed on the spot. Add time for old gutter removal, fascia repair, extra downspouts or a second story. We give you an expected time with the written price after we have measured the edge.

What gutter material holds up best near the coast?

Salt air attacks steel and cheap fasteners first, so coastal homes in places like Santa Monica or Hermosa Beach tend to favor aluminum or copper with corrosion-resistant hardware. Which is right depends on your budget, your color, and how the house is finished. We explain the trade-offs before you choose.

Where should downspouts drain on a hillside gutter installation?

Away from the footing and off the neighbor's side, with a path for water to keep moving. On a slope that can mean an extension across the yard or a connection to an existing drain. We look at where water will run once it leaves the pipe before we mark the downspout positions.

Areas served for gutter installation

  • Montebello, CARolling hills and 1950s homes in Montebello mean sloped lots where downspout discharge has to run away from footings, and the city has its own building department.
  • South San Gabriel, CACompact postwar homes under county permitting leave short side yards, so downspout extensions and splash blocks need to fit tight spaces.
  • Riverside, CARiverside's hot inland summers bake sealant and paint on gutters, and older Mission Inn-era homes may need fascia checked before new metal is hung.
  • Pasadena, CACraftsman homes with wide eaves and exposed rafter tails in historic districts need gutter profiles that fit the roof edge and, in some areas, design review.
  • Fillmore, CAFillmore sits in the Santa Clara River Valley in Ventura County, so it is a long drive from Van Nuys and a realistic visit time is part of the conversation.
  • Claremont, CATree-lined streets near the Claremont Colleges load gutters with leaves, so trough size, outlet count and guard options all come up at the estimate.
  • Santa Clarita, CAHot, dry summers and brush close to many tracts put dry debris in gutters, so material, guard choice and clearance habits are discussed together.
  • Lawndale, CASmall-lot homes and 1940s to 1960s multi-unit buildings along Hawthorne Boulevard have little room for discharge, so downspout placement is planned around neighbors.
  • Orange, CAMany homes in Old Towne were built before 1920, so original fascia and eaves need a close look before new gutters are hung, and historic review may apply.
  • Hermosa Beach, CAMarine air corrodes cheap fasteners and thin finishes near the beach, so material and hardware choice matter more than the gutter profile.
