Fire damage roof repair in Los Angeles covers a wide range, from a house with scorched eaves to a roof covered in ash after a wildfire burned the hills above. This page explains how we would assess and quote it, as part of our wider emergency roof repair work.

Fire-damaged roofs can be unsafe to walk, and the building may be unstable. Stay off the roof until the fire department or building official clears the property.

How fire, heat and embers damage a roof even when the house stands

Much of the roof damage in a wildfire does not come from flames reaching the house. Embers land far from the flames, in valleys, gutters, vents and the gaps along eaves. Radiant heat from a burning neighbor or hillside can blister shingles and crack tile on a house that never ignites.

The scale is large. CAL FIRE reports the January 2025 Eaton Fire destroyed 9,419 structures and damaged 1,076, while the Palisades Fire destroyed 6,845 and damaged 975. The 2018 Woolsey Fire destroyed 1,643. Many homes left standing may carry roof damage nobody can see from the street.

Hose water soaks underlayment and decking, and firefighters sometimes cut openings in a roof to vent heat.

Signs of smoke, ember and heat damage on your roof

A roof after fire usually shows several small problems rather than one big one. We check each one.

What you see What it can mean
Ash and charred debris in valleys and gutters Embers or burned leaves that can hold moisture and block drains
Curled or blistered shingles Heat exposure; the shingle may no longer shed water
Cracked or spalled tile Thermal shock; tile may need replacing
Warped or yellowed vent covers and skylights Plastic parts softened by heat
Soot streaks or discolored metal flashing Smoke exposure, possible corrosion
Scorched fascia or eave edge Embers reached the roof edge, check under it
Blistered and curled composition shingles with soot staining near a roof edge

Should ash be removed from a roof, and what comes first?

Yes, before the first rain, and carefully. Do not blow or hose ash around. It is fine and abrasive, and washing it off can send it into gutters and storm drains. Wear a respirator, wet it lightly to limit dust, and bag it. Local guidance generally asks that ash stay out of storm drains.

Some older roofing materials may contain asbestos. Where we see signs of it, we recommend a lab test before any removal. SCAQMD Rule 1403 sets survey and notification rules for regulated work. We do not test for it ourselves.

How we would inspect a roof after a wildfire or house fire

  1. Check that it is safe. We confirm the structure is cleared for entry, then set up with the right fall protection.
  2. Photograph before anything is moved. Ash, scorching and damage are recorded where they sit.
  3. Walk the field and edges. We look at shingles, tile, flashing, vents, skylights and the eave line.
  4. Check the attic. We look for heat damage on the decking, wet insulation and daylight.
  5. Rank the damage. Repair, partial replacement or full replacement are priced as separate options.
  6. Write it up. The report has photos, measurements and a repair estimate you can give your insurer.

What does fire damage roof repair include?

Fire damage roof repair starts with an assessment, then a plan that matches what the fire did. Nothing is scoped until we have seen the ash, the edges and the attic.

For most fire-exposed roofs, the scope can include:

  • Bagging ash and charred debris from the field, valleys and gutters
  • Repair or replacement of blistered shingles, cracked tile and scorched edge metal
  • New flashing, vent covers and skylight parts where heat softened them
  • Replacing burned or soaked decking, fascia and eave boards
  • Underlayment renewal wherever the covering comes off
  • A temporary cover when the roof is open and rain is coming

Cal Fire advises checking the attic, gutters and roof for blown-in embers, so we look there first.

Do you have to rebuild to Class A standards? Rules after a fire

Class A is a fire-resistance rating for a roof assembly, and many composition shingle, concrete tile and metal products carry it. In the Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, a Class A roof covering is required. Our Class A fire-rated roofing page explains the rating, and our guide to Class A roofs and fire zones in Los Angeles goes further.

The City of Los Angeles prohibits wood shake and wood shingle coverings citywide, with a narrow exception for small repairs. California's Wildland-Urban Interface Code (Title 24, Part 7) took effect Jan 1, 2026, and the state updated its fire hazard zone maps in 2025. Replacing more than half the roof generally brings cool roof rules into play, so ask how your repair will be counted. Confirm your address with CAL FIRE's viewer and your local building department. Ask your building department whether your repair or rebuild triggers the requirement.

Fire damage claims: what to document and who does what

A fire claim runs through your insurer. If your policy comes through the FAIR Plan, it is a basic fire policy that covers fire, smoke and lightning, and wind can be added, so read what yours includes. California's claims rules generally require an insurer to acknowledge a claim within 15 days and accept or deny it within 40 days after proof of claim. The Department of Insurance consumer line is 800-927-4357.

On the roof side, we inspect, take photographs, put a repair estimate on paper and can stand with you at the roof when the adjuster arrives. Talking terms with the insurer is for you or a licensed public adjuster you hire. Our roof insurance claims page has the full split. Never agree to skip your deductible.

After a declared disaster, California law gives homeowners extra time to cancel repair contracts, and a down payment is generally limited to $1,000 or 10 percent of the contract, whichever is less.

What affects the cost of fire damage roof repair?

Cost follows the extent of heat and water damage, and what the roof is made of. Clearing ash and replacing a few tiles is one job. Replacing burned decking, rebuilding eaves, or replacing a whole covering because it can no longer shed water is another. Class A rules, tile matching, steep slopes and lab testing all move the price.

We price the work in writing after seeing the roof, with options broken out so you can compare them against your insurer's figure. For a longer read, see our guide to roof damage after a wildfire.

Why Clear Shield for fire damage roof repair in Los Angeles

We have not listed fire jobs, so we say only how we would work. Reviewers in Van Nuys describe habits that apply here. One customer had a roof inspected and the damage documented for an insurance claim. Another mentions pictures and measurements before quoting, and a third describes a second pass with a magnetic roller for missed nails and thorough daily cleanup.

We would photograph before anything moves, explain each option and put the scope in writing.

What Van Nuys customers say about inspections and cleanup

“They also performed a full water test afterward to make sure the leak was fully resolved, and everything stayed dry.”

“I even saw Roger return later with a magnetic roller to check the ground again for any missed roofing nails, which showed real care and attention to detail.”
Sandra H. · Google review, 3 months ago as of November 2026
“The crew’s workmanship looked top-notch, and they kept me updated by sending drone photos of the roof work as it happened, which was really helpful since I wasn’t about to climb up there myself!”

We cover Santa Clarita, Stevenson Ranch, Ladera Heights and West Hollywood. Santa Clarita has brush exposure that shapes its tile and shingle choices, and a fire-damaged roof there is also a chance to reconsider the covering. While you wait for the claim, our emergency roof tarping page covers temporary protection.

Fire Damage Roof Repair: common questions

Can a roof be damaged even if the house did not burn?

Yes. Radiant heat can blister shingles and crack tile, embers can lodge in valleys, vents and gutters, and firefighting water or cut ventilation holes can leave the roof leaking. Smoke and soot also stain and corrode metal. Damage often shows only from the attic or at the edges, so we look beyond the field of the roof before anything is declared sound.

Should ash be removed from a roof?

Yes, but carefully, and not by sweeping dry or blasting it into the gutters. Ash can be abrasive, can hold moisture against the roof, and clogs valleys and downspouts before the first rain. County guidance generally asks that it not be washed into storm drains. Use a respirator and sealed disposal.

Do I have to rebuild to Class A standards?

It depends on your address and the scope of work. A Class A roof covering is required in the Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, and the City of Los Angeles prohibits wood shake and wood shingle coverings. Check your address on CAL FIRE's viewer and ask your building department whether a repair or rebuild triggers the requirement.

Can heat-damaged concrete or clay tile be reused after a Los Angeles fire?

Sometimes, if it is sound. Tile that has cracked, spalled or been discolored by intense heat is unreliable, and discolored tile may still be fine but needs a closer look. We examine each tile, set aside the intact ones and price replacements separately. Matching older tile takes time, so ask early.

What should I photograph on a roof after a wildfire near Los Angeles?

Photograph the ash in valleys and gutters before cleanup, scorched edges, vent covers, skylights and any melted or warped plastic. Take wide shots and close ones, and note the date. From the attic, photograph stains and daylight. We can add measurements and a written repair estimate.

Does a fire-damaged roof need protection before the winter rains?

Yes, if the covering is open or burned through. Los Angeles gets most of its rain from December through March, and a damaged roof can leak into a house that is already compromised. Tarping buys time while the claim moves. We will set up the earliest visit the schedule allows, then explain the options.
