Storms leave a pattern. Wind takes edges and caps, rain finds the weak joints and fallen debris does the rest. If water is coming in now, start with our emergency roof repair page, then use this page to sort out what a storm did to the roof and what to do next.

How do you know if a storm damaged your roof?

Signs are often subtle in the first days. Walk the property and look at the roof from the ground, then go inside.

  • Outside: shingles lifted, creased or missing; tiles slid or cracked; bent drip edge or gutters; debris in valleys
  • Inside: new ceiling stains, bubbling paint or damp walls below the roofline
  • In the attic: damp insulation, dark streaks on boards, daylight at the ridge
  • In the yard: shingle pieces, granules or ridge caps that came down

Do not climb up to check. A drone survey or a roofer with the right gear and fall protection is safer, and it gives you pictures for your records.

What storms do to Los Angeles roofs

Los Angeles storms come in two kinds, and each damages a roof differently. Atmospheric rivers bring long, steady rain that finds weak flashing and worn underlayment. Wind events push debris, lift edges and shift caps. Van Nuys gets about 13 inches of rain a year by NOAA's normals, mostly December through March, so a lot of it falls on a roof that has baked all summer.

That sequence explains many storm leaks. Sun dries rubber boots and sealant until they split, then the first big storm finds every split. Our page on wind damage roof repair covers the Santa Ana side in detail. Hail is uncommon in Los Angeles, but our hail damage roof repair page covers it.

Storm damage on hillside and burn-scar roofs

Foothill and canyon streets add risks the flats do not have. Heavy rain on steep slopes can send mud and debris down onto roofs, gutters and yards. After the February 2024 atmospheric river, Los Angeles County reported hundreds of mudslides and debris flows, according to Inside Climate News. Slopes burned in the January 2025 fires, including the Eaton and Palisades fires, are more prone to debris flow in heavy rain.

On these roofs we look for impact damage, buried valleys and gutters packed with silt. Weight on a roof is a concern too, so keep debris off it until it can be removed safely. Call the county or your city if mud is moving toward the house. A roofer cannot make a slope safe.

Our storm roof inspection, step by step

  1. Ask what happened. When the storm hit, where water showed and what has been tried.
  2. Walk the ground. We look at gutters, downspouts, fascia and debris.
  3. Survey the roof. We check slopes, ridges, valleys, flashing and penetrations, from the roof where safe, or by drone.
  4. Check the attic. Damp boards and insulation show where water got in.
  5. Cover urgent openings. If the roof is open, we arrange a temporary cover first.
  6. Write it up. You get photos and a written repair estimate that lays out what to repair now and what can wait.

Storm damage that hides from the ground

Some damage is invisible without a closer look.

Hidden damage Why it matters
Lifted flashing at walls or chimneys A small gap lets wind-driven rain behind the metal
Cracked tile under a branch The underlayment below takes the water
Soaked decking with no stain yet Boards rot slowly and the leak shows up later
Split pipe boots Rubber cracks open and leaks only in heavy rain
Damaged fascia or soffit at the back edge Water gets behind gutters and into framing

Reviewers in Van Nuys describe this sort of finding. One customer had ridge vent and gutters repaired after storm-fallen limbs, and another about 50 feet of soffit after a storm. Another found a damaged board near the roof that had gone unnoticed.

Storm damage roof repair or storm damage roof replacement?

Most storm damage is local, so repair is the usual answer. A few lost shingles, a failed boot or a handful of cracked tiles can be fixed without replacing anything else. Replacement becomes the better choice when damage covers several slopes, the deck is wet through or the roof was already worn.

Layers matter too. California's residential code does not allow a new roof over one that already has two applications, or over a soaked or deteriorated roof, or over tile. If a storm shows the roof has two layers, a tear-off is likely. Ask for both prices from the same inspection. Our roof replacement page explains what that means.

What affects the price of storm damage roof repair?

The estimate depends on how much the storm took and how hard the roof is to reach:

  • Extent of damage. A few shingles differ from a whole slope.
  • Roof type and pitch. Tile and steep roofs take more labor and safety planning.
  • Hidden water damage. Soft decking and wet insulation add to the scope.
  • Temporary cover. If the roof is open, protecting it is a separate cost.
  • Matching. Older shingles and tile may not match new material exactly.

The written price follows once we have seen the roof.

Storm damage, your insurer and the adjuster visit

Photograph the damage before anything is moved, and keep the date. Storm damage may be covered, while age and wear usually are not. Reviewers describe us inspecting a roof and documenting damage for an insurance claim. For the claim file we can inspect the roof, take photos, write a repair estimate and attend the adjuster's visit.

We do not act for you with the insurer. Only you or a licensed public adjuster negotiates a claim, and you should never waive a deductible. Our guide to meeting the insurance adjuster and our roof insurance claims page explain the process.

Repairs that stay small may need little paperwork, but bigger work can bring in permits, so ask the City of Los Angeles building department (LADBS) or your own city.

We inspect storm damage across the area, including Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, La Crescenta-Montrose and Bell Canyon. Foothill streets get more debris and canyon wind than the flats, and distance from Van Nuys changes the schedule, so we confirm timing on the call.

Storm Damage Roof Repair: common questions

How do I know if a storm damaged my roof?

Look from the ground for shingles out of line, tiles that have slid, bent metal at edges and debris on the roof. Inside, check ceilings for new stains and the attic for damp or daylight. If you can see none of it, a visit may still find lifted flashing, so book an inspection after any strong storm.

Should I call a roofer or my insurer first?

Do both the same day, but photograph the damage first. A roofer can cover an open roof and document what happened, and your insurer opens the claim and sends its own adjuster. California insurers generally must acknowledge a claim within 15 days, so report it promptly. Cover any open roof right away and keep the receipts.

What storm damage is easy to miss from the ground?

Pipe boots split by wind-driven rain, flashing lifted a few millimeters at a wall, cracked tile under a branch, and water-soaked decking with no stain yet. Gutter and fascia damage also hides at the back edge. One Van Nuys customer describes about 50 feet of soffit repaired after a storm, damage that began as a small gap.

Is an atmospheric river harder on a roof than a normal rain?

It can be, because the rain is steadier and longer. Van Nuys averages about 13 inches a year, mostly December through March, so one strong event can deliver a large share of it. Long soaking finds weak flashing and worn underlayment that short showers never reach, so check the attic once it passes.

Does storm damage mean I need a full roof replacement?

Not usually. Most storm damage is local, such as lost shingles, a failed boot or a few cracked tile, and can be repaired. Replacement is on the table when damage is spread across slopes, the deck is soaked or the roof was already near the end of its life. We show you the photos before you decide.

Areas served for storm damage roof repair

  • Monrovia, CAFoothill Craftsman homes below Angeles National Forest, where canyon runoff and debris can pile into valleys and gutters during a heavy atmospheric river.
  • La Crescenta-Montrose, CAFoothill community against Angeles National Forest, where pine needles and canyon gusts load gutters and roof edges before a storm even arrives.
  • Bradbury, CALarge estates on private roads below the forest, so a storm survey includes long runs of roof, drainage and access that a drone view helps check.
  • Oxnard, CACoastal plain where salt air and fog stress roof metals, and storm-driven rain finds weak flashing. Oxnard is in Ventura County, which runs its own permitting.
  • Laguna Hills, CATile-roofed tracts with HOAs, where cracked or slipped tile after a storm may need a color and profile match approved before repair.
  • Westlake Village, CALake-centered city on the county line where HOA rules govern tile profile and color, which shapes a storm repair that needs matching material.
  • Channel Islands Beach, CATightly packed beach homes right against the ocean, where wind-driven rain and salt air work at flashing, vents and fascia together.
  • Torrance, CALarge 1950s tracts in a city with about 12 inches of rain a year, where sun-dried boots and sealant split first and storms find every one.
  • El Segundo, CACoastal salt exposure plus large commercial roofs near the aerospace campuses, so a storm survey covers both drains and metal edges.
