Cedar Shake Roofing in Los Angeles, CA
Cedar shake roofing in Los Angeles is now mostly a question of what to replace it with. The City of Los Angeles prohibits wood shake and wood shingle coverings, so an aging shake roof usually becomes a fire-rated lookalike. This page explains how we would assess an old shake roof, the substitutes, and what to ask before you sign.

Cedar shake roofing in Los Angeles is a legacy roof, not a new product to shop. If you have one, the practical question is when to replace it and with what. If you are choosing from scratch, start with the roofing materials overview. This page describes how we would assess and quote a shake roof, and what the rules mean for your options.
Is cedar shake roofing in Los Angeles still allowed?
For new coverings in the City of Los Angeles, no. A LADBS bulletin prohibits wood shake and wood shingle roof coverings citywide, with a narrow exception for small repairs. The repair exception runs through a written request for modification that weighs fire district location and nearby structures, per the bulletin. That means a full replacement cannot go back to cedar.
Rules differ elsewhere, because every city runs its own building department and unincorporated areas follow the county. If you live in a fire hazard zone, the roof assembly must also meet California's wildfire building rules, which require Class A in the Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone. State fire zone maps were updated in 2025, so check your address on CAL FIRE's viewer. California's Wildland-Urban Interface Code, Title 24, Part 7, took effect January 1, 2026.
For context, CAL FIRE reports the January 2025 Eaton Fire destroyed 9,419 structures and the Palisades Fire 6,845. Fire-rated roofing is the reason the shake rules exist. Our guide to Class A fire-rated roofing and our post on Class A roofs in Los Angeles fire zones cover the assembly side.

Signs an old shake roof is at the end of its life
Shake roofs age in recognizable ways. Cedar dries and splits in sun, holds moisture under shade and moss, and slowly loses its grip on the nails.
- Cupped or curled shakes that no longer lie flat
- Splits running down the grain that open a path for water
- Moss, algae or dark patches on shaded slopes
- Missing shakes after wind, with exposed underlayment
- Daylight or water stains in the attic
- Rotted ends near valleys and eaves
A few of these on a sound roof can be patched. Many of them together mean the roof is done. Reviewers describe hidden problems found during inspection, such as damaged boards near the roof and fascia damage, the kind of thing an older roof of any material can hide.
What replaces a shake roof but keeps the look?
Several fire-rated products imitate the rough, shadowed look of shake. They differ in weight, price and how well they resist fire and wind.
| Option | The look | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Synthetic or composite shake | Close to split cedar | Ask for the Class A assembly listing |
| Shake-profile laminated shingle | Deep shadow lines | Lighter, widely available, see asphalt shingle roofing |
| Concrete shake-profile tile | Rough, textured | Heavy, needs framing check, see tile roofing |
| Metal shake panels | Stamped shake pattern | Noncombustible, see metal roofing |
Whatever you choose, ask for the full assembly, because underlayment is part of a fire rating. If the roof covers more than half the area, a cool-rated product is also required. See cool roofing.

How we would assess and replace a shake roof, step by step
We do not have a Van Nuys review that describes a shake job, so this is how we would approach one, not a record of past installs.
- Photograph the roof. We record shakes, valleys, flashing and the eaves.
- Check the attic. We look for skip sheathing, water stains and rot in the framing.
- Find your jurisdiction. City, county or fire zone sets the allowed assembly.
- Choose a substitute. You see two or three fire-rated options with trade-offs.
- Write the estimate. It covers tear-off, any added decking, underlayment and the new covering.
- Plan the tear-off. Wood debris, nails and deck repairs are scheduled with cleanup.
One Van Nuys customer describes a second pass with a magnetic roller to catch missed nails, which matters on a tear-off with decades of old fasteners.
What a shake replacement estimate should list
- Tear-off of every layer, with disposal of wood, nails and old felt
- Deck inspection, with solid decking added over any skip sheathing
- Underlayment and flashing named as part of the fire-rated assembly
- The substitute covering, with its Class A assembly listing for your address
- Repairs to rotted boards, rafters or fascia, each as its own line
- Who holds the permit, and cleanup including a magnetic sweep

What affects the cost of replacing a wood shake roof?
Shake replacement has more variables than a standard re-roof because of what is under the shakes. The cost drivers:
- The substitute you choose, and its weight and profile
- Added solid decking where old skip sheathing is found
- Roof size, pitch and number of valleys and dormers
- Rot in boards, rafters or fascia that needs repair
- Underlayment and flashing required by the fire assembly
- Disposal of aged wood, nails and old felt
For scale, Angi estimates roof replacement in Los Angeles at roughly $4 to $12 per square foot, averaging about $8.60, or about $17,200 for a typical 1,700 square foot home (accessed November 2026). A shake job is not a plain re-roof, so treat that only as a market reference. Our prices come in writing after we see the roof. Ask any shake quote to list decking work separately, because that line is where surprises usually appear.
Shake roofs, fire zones and home insurance
Insurers consider roof age and condition, and an old wood roof in a brush-exposed area is easy to flag. Ask your insurer what it needs, and ask early. We can inspect, photograph, document damage and write a repair estimate, and be on site when the adjuster visits. Negotiating the claim is for the policyholder or a licensed public adjuster only.
If the roof is damaged by storm or fire, the process follows the usual claim timelines. California insurers generally must acknowledge a claim within 15 days and accept or deny within 40 days of proof of claim. The CDI hotline is 800-927-4357.

Why Clear Shield for cedar shake roof replacement in Los Angeles

Cedar Shake Roofing: common questions
Are wood shake roofs still allowed in Los Angeles?
Not as new coverings in the City of Los Angeles, which prohibits wood shake and wood shingle roofing citywide under a LADBS bulletin. A narrow exception exists for small repairs. Other cities and unincorporated areas have their own rules, so check with the building department for your address. We recommend asking before you buy any shake product.
What replaces a shake roof but keeps the look?
Several fire-rated products imitate shake. Synthetic or composite shake, laminated asphalt shingles in a shake profile, concrete shake-profile tile and metal shake panels all exist. Which fits depends on weight, fire zone, color and budget. Each should have a Class A assembly listing for your address, and ask for it in writing.
Does a shake roof affect my home insurance?
It can. Insurers look at roof age, condition and material, and an old shake roof may raise questions at renewal. Ask your insurer directly, because policies differ. If you have trouble, the California Department of Insurance hotline is 800-927-4357. We document roof condition and write a repair or replacement estimate; the claim itself stays with you or a licensed public adjuster.
Can I repair a wood shake roof in Los Angeles instead of replacing it?
Only within narrow limits. The City of Los Angeles generally prohibits wood shake coverings, with a small-repair exception that needs approval. A few missing shakes may be patched, but a roof with widespread cupping, rot or moss usually needs full replacement. We photograph the damage and tell you which side of that line the roof falls on.
What is hidden under my old cedar shake roof?
Often spaced boards, called skip sheathing, instead of the solid plywood shingles need. A new composition or synthetic roof generally needs solid decking, so boards may be added. Old shake roofs also hide worn underlayment and water-stained framing. The tear-off shows what is there, and we explain and photograph any added work before it begins.
Do cedar shake roofing replacements need a permit in Los Angeles?
Generally yes. Replacing a shake roof inside the City of Los Angeles goes through LADBS, with either a building permit or, for qualifying single-family homes, a certificate of compliance. In a fire hazard zone the new assembly must also meet Class A rules. Settle in the contract who holds the permit and who answers the building department's questions.
